If you have ever stumbled to the west end of the city, you have probably witnessed the serene beauty of Humber College campus. Surrounded by trees and abundant in secret paths and walking trails that lead to the shores of Lake Ontario, the campus grounds provide the perfect small-town-school experience.
With majority of the students living a short walk away from campus, there is a great sense of community at Humber Lakeshore. Unfortunately, once the picnic season ends, it becomes difficult to maintain the closeness. With the new campus development project, this is all about to change.
“Student success is at the heart of everything we do,” says Wanda Buote, principal at Lakeshore Campus.
After four years of planning, Humber College is thrilled to announce the addition of two new facilities to the south campus grounds.
The southwest corner of Lake Shore Boulevard and Colonel Samuel Smith Park Drive was selected to be the location of the new 45,000 square feet Welcome Centre & Lakeshore Interpretive Centre. The four-storey facility is meant to centralize all campus services, including peer tutoring, test centre and educational spaces. Moriyama & Teshima Architects took the project a step further by creating a space designed specifically for meditation and quiet reflection. The multi-faith centre is meant to help students cope with stress and practice their faith without leaving the campus.
One of the more exciting pieces of this project is the Interpretive Centre. This space will allow for recording and displaying of the history of Lakeshore grounds, dating back to its rich aboriginal origins. The facility will be open to the public, and hopefully bring Humber students closer to the local community.
The new Lakeshore Campus Athletic Centre, planned for the northeast corner of Lakeshore Boulevard and Twenty Fourth Street, is what the students of Humber College are looking forward to the most. The tree floor facility will house a weight and cardio room, group exercise and dance studios, administrative spaces and full change rooms.
The new Welcome Centre and the Athletic Centre will help support both educational and recreational needs of students, as well as build a greater sense of community. Both facilities are well under construction, and are scheduled to open in January of 2016.
